"The Secret" was the sixth annual production of City @ Peace, Santa Barbara, CA. The Secret: a show about the empowerment of teenage girls, explored the challenges that teenage girls face in our society with the life threatening and soul crushing forces of: bulimia, physical and sexual violation, hegemonic masculine oppression, and suicide. The idea arrived at by the group was to express that no matter how difficult a situation may be that courage, inner strength, and self-acceptance will overcome it all. Writing and staging "The Secret' was a collaborative process, with the focus being to listen to what young people have to say about their lives and the world we live in. As Drama Director of City @ Peace Santa Barbara from 1995-2001, my focus was to create a safe place for young people to express themselves without fear of judgment, trying to "fix" them, or spending much time trying to figure out "why" things are the way they are.
